Great mee kari and laksa at the captain’s ‘cabin’

“Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. This is your captain Azrin Mohamad Zawawi speaking.

“Welcome on board to Kapten Corner in Boomtown, Subang Jaya.

“Please take your seats and make yourself comfortable. You will be served shortly. We hope you enjoy your meal.

“Thank you.”

Excuse me for sounding dramatic, but it’s not every day that you are served by a pilot in full uniform while seated under a shady tree.

This was two days ago when my wife and I chose Kapten Corner in USJ 11 for dinner as we had heard so much about this new stall. Moreover, it is close to home as we don’t travel far these days with the coronavirus in top form in Selangor.

We were greeted by Azrin’s wife Latun Noralyani Meor Aminudin or Yanie for short. She told us what was on the menu and we settled for a bowl of Ipoh Mee Kari and a bowl of Laksa Utara.

I’m no lover of soupy stuff but decided to give it a go – and I was more than pleased as the mee kari had the perfect flavour for me.

It was not too sour or spicy, just the right blend. There were chicken strips, beansprouts and a hardboiled egg in the RM7 meal.

I surprised myself by cleaning up the whole bowl. I was generous enough to let the missus have a spoonful too (Just kidding. She had two spoonfuls).

She said it was much better than most places. How can I disagree with someone whose first love is curry mee?

My wife also found the RM7 laksa much to her liking. I had a bit of it and concurred.

A bowl of Laksa Utara.

They also serve Bihun Sup and Rojak Buah – that will be something for next time.

The evidence of the food quality is in the endless takeaway orders. There was a continuous stream of customers while we were having our meal.

Yanie sat herself at our table and chatted a bit. She told us they decided to go full-time with the food business after Azrin, 44, was retrenched from Malindo.

They open for only six hours (1.30pm to 7.30pm) and the food is always sold out. They are closed on Mondays.

The food aside, the good captain and Yanie turned out to be gems. Azrin joined us at the table a short while later (but we ensured we maintained a safe distance).

Their friendliness and humility was remarkable. They attributed their sudden success to their customers who Azrin said give suggestions which he is always ready to consider.

The writer takes a wefie with Yanie and Azrin.

Azrin made headlines more than a month ago after he started selling food at the stall while in full pilot’s uniform.

Business has boomed at Boomtown but Azrin is working on bigger plans.

The big-hearted man intends to set up mini shop villages – nine in Selangor for a start.

His idea is to help others who suffered a similar fate as him. Each of these nine places will have a variety of shops. For instance, you can do your groceries, get your haircut and have dinner – all within walking distance.

The couple has four children and celebrated their 17th wedding anniversary yesterday. Congratulations!

We hope Azrin’s business can fly high and wish that his plan takes off smoothly so others can also benefit.
