Malaysia to launch AI office tomorrow. Here’s what you need to know

Malaysia is committed to being a leader in the digital sphere. By taking advantage of the booming digital economy, the Southeast Asian nation has taken numerous steps to harness the full potential of digital technologies, including artificial intelligence.

Beyond regulations, the Digital Ministry will launch the National AI Office (NAIO) tomorrow. The launch comes on the first anniversary of the Digital Ministry.

Here are some facts about this landmark initiative.

  • The Malaysian Cabinet approved NAIO on Aug 28, 2024.
  • NAIO will be launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre, Kuala Lumpur, at 9am.
  • The office will be the central authority driving Malaysia’s AI agenda.

  • NAIO aims to enhance the country’s AI capabilities by promoting innovation, enabling cross-sector collaboration, and supporting the integration of AI into government, industry, and societal frameworks.
  • It will spearhead initiatives that leverage AI to strengthen the digital economy and improve public services. Additionally, it will contribute to sustainable development goals.
  • NAIO will also facilitate Malaysia’s participation in regional AI developments, particularly in Southeast Asia, by creating AI-driven solutions that address local and regional challenges.
  • Shamsul Izhan Abdul Majid is the head of NAIO.

When announcing the establishment of NAIO two months ago, Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo said: “By promoting cross-sector collaboration, NAIO will position Malaysia at the forefront of AI development and adoption, both nationally and regionally.”
