With schools closed and nowhere to go, 19-year-old student Leng Giat Yu decided to earn some extra income for her family.
The Form Six student, had since Friday, started working at a food truck selling golden sweet potato balls at Section 14, Petaling Jaya.
“My job is to roll the sweet potato balls while another friend fries them … we divide our jobs here,” Leng, who studies at a school in Bandar Utama, told Twentytwo13.
“Work starts at 10am and ends at 8pm.”
Leng said that as school was shut and with semester exams only in October, this was the best way to spend her free time.
“My parents work, but I thought it would be good if I could earn some extra income. They support my decision on the condition that I take the necessary precautions to stay safe.”
Crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside, golden potato balls are a hit in Taiwan, but have since become a local favourite.
Asked how business was, she said she was told by her colleague that it was better before the Movement Control Order.
“Sales was about 100 packets a day, I was told, but it’s getting worse now,” she added.
