Malaysia Athletics president Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim has denied allegations of misappropriation of funds within the national body.
Shahidan was referring to claims made by his deputy, Datuk Fadzil A. Bakar, who told Twentytwo13 last week that Shahidan had ignored recommendations to refer a member to the disciplinary board over alleged misappropriation of funds.
Shahidan today claimed that he was the one who stopped the payment to the council member, as he wanted to ensure there was no issue with the claims.
“Malaysia Athletics is deeply disappointed and disheartened by the actions of a certain council member who recently made statements to the media,” said Shahidan at a press conference in Wisma OCM, Kuala Lumpur, this afternoon.
“We strongly deny allegations of financial misappropriation. The claim is under review. No payment has been made.
“A meeting will be held to review this issue, and appropriate action will be taken if any wrongdoing is found.”
Fadzil had previously also said the national body is in a mess and that changes are needed for it to become relevant again.
Shahidan, who is also the Arau MP, denied any plans to remain in power beyond his mandate, which ends on June 30.
There were talks that Shahidan intended to implement the new Malaysia Athletics constitution, which grants office bearers a maximum of two four-year terms, replacing the current three three-year terms.
Previously known as the Malaysia Athletics Federation, the Sports Commissioner’s Office approved a name change to Malaysia Athletics on Jan 15, along with an amendment to the constitution.
“The council has not discussed postponing the AGM. Maybe there was some coffeeshop talk, but it will go ahead as scheduled,” he said.
“As for the new constitution, the council has to endorse it, but we will have an AGM and elections by June 30.”
Asked if Malaysia Athletics will take action against Fadzil, Shahidan said his focus is on the AGM.
On whether he would stand for re-election, Shahidan said he would announce it in due course.
“Anyone can stand for elections. If there is a better candidate, I don’t mind stepping aside,” he said.
