Securing future of top stars was a Liverpool masterstroke

The first international break couldn’t have come at the worst possible time for Dev Prasad.

Just as the port and logistics consultant was enjoying the start of the English Premier League, it has come to a halt, with matches only resuming next weekend.

Nonetheless, the Liverpool supporter is happy with what he has seen from his team after three matches.

The avid golfer said the management did a great job securing the future of Jordan Henderson, Andy Robertson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Fabinho, Alisson and Virgil van Dijk, who are the spine of the team.

The club also extended several youngsters’ contracts and discussed a new deal with top striker Mohamed Salah.

Dev shares his thoughts with Twentytwo13 on how far Liverpool can go this season.

How long have you been a fan? What prompted you to support Liverpool?

Dev: I’ve been a fan since the mid-1980s. It was a no-brainer back then, and it’s been the best decision ever.

Are you disappointed Liverpool didn’t bring in an attacking player during the transfer window?

Dev: No, I’m not. We already have a bloated team, and no top-class players would want to sit on the bench and hope for a chance to be fielded. Our fringe players are good enough to come in if needed. I trust Jurgen Klopp and FSG (Fenway Sports Group Holdings).

What is your opinion of the owners, FSG? Do you think they were right to prioritise contract extensions and adding to the stadium over new signings?

Dev: As other top-class players from rival teams are getting much more, FSG had to retain them. In management, retaining top talent is the greatest challenge. Our salary ceiling cap is below that of other top teams.

Can this be the season Naby Keita comes good?

Dev: He’s top class, barring injuries and more game time, I’m sure he’ll come good and prove his worth.

What are your impressions of Harvey Elliot? Does he remind you of any past players?

Dev: He reminds me of a mix between Dirk Kuyt and Steve McManaman. The energy of Dirk and a deadly crosser like Steve.

Do you think Liverpool can regain the league title?

Dev: We’ve got a team that’s almost complete and know each other well. No new faces to ruffle the feathers. Barring any more injuries (Roberto ‘Bobby’ Firmino might be out for a few weeks), we are definitely a serious title contender. If not champion, then among the top three.
