Spirit of Olympism ride set to inspire Malaysians to embrace essence of sports

Feb 11 marks an important day for the Malaysia Olympians Association (MOA).

For starters, the association, comprising the nation’s finest athletes who have donned the national colours at the Olympics, will unveil its new logo.

Equally important, the event will also mark the launch of its ‘Spirit of Olympism’ campaign.

The fundraising campaign will see avid cyclist and author Alex Goh (main image), cycle from i-City in Shah Alam to Johor Bahru, in seven days.

Goh is scheduled to stop at several locations, namely Morib, Port Dickson, Melaka, Muar, Benut, and Pontian, where he will be met by present and past athletes, and other stakeholders before ending his 455km journey at Paradigm Mall in Johor Bahru on Feb 18.

Several activities have also been lined up at the locations where Goh will stop throughout the journey.

“This event will feature Goh, who is the Malaysia Book of Records holder for having completed 10 World Marathons,” said MOA president, Noraseela Khalid.

“Goh has been practising a fantastic way of life by incorporating sports in it,” said Noraseela.

“MOA is happy to work with those who are passionate about sports, and hopefully inspire more people to embrace sports.”

She said Goh had volunteered to support MOA in its cause.

“Our main objectives are to inculcate the Spirit of Olympism and promote sports as an active lifestyle among the community.

“We also want to honour, value, and bring our Olympians and sportspeople closer to the public.”

She said this will hopefully inspire people from all walks of life, and spark interest and desire in the younger generation to become Olympians.

Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh is expected to flag off Goh’s adventure.

Partnering MOA for the event are Haruka Bakery, Heriot-Watt University, WCT Malls Management, and Twentytwo13.

Supporters include Malaysian Olympism in Action Society, Terramed Physio and Rehab, and Liquid Marketing.

A QR code is being developed to allow well-wishers to contribute when they meet Goh at the various stops.
