KUALA LUMPUR: At least 50 children from Kampung Orang Asli Batu 16 in Gombak will compete in the Go for It! Cross Country Kuala Lumpur event on July 5.
Announcing the initiative, Federal Territories Athletics Association (FTAA) president Datuk Seri Dr V. Pulainthiran said the association aims to involve more participants from the Orang Asli community in future programmes, providing greater access to athletics and opportunities for underrepresented groups to experience organised sport.
Pulainthiran also announced the introduction of two new categories – men’s and women’s veterans for the 15km and 10km races.
“For now, Rotary Club Hartamas has come forward to sponsor these 50 children, but I expect more will sign up, and FTAA will assist them,” he said.
“Athletics is for all, not just a select group. That is also why we have introduced the veterans’ categories.
“We now have competitive events for primary and secondary school students, open categories and categories for older participants, on top of the fun run for runners of all ages.”
He added that FTAA hopes to collaborate with more organisations to promote sports among underrepresented communities.
Designed as a fun, family-friendly event, Cross Country Kuala Lumpur aims to be inclusive, welcoming seasoned athletes, first-time runners, children and older participants alike.
There are 13 categories: 15km road running (men’s and women’s open for those aged 18 and above, and veterans for those aged 40 and above); 10km cross-country (men’s and women’s open for those aged 18 and above, and veterans for those aged 40 and above); 7km cross-country (boys and girls aged 13–17); 3km cross-country (boys and girls aged 9–12); and a 5km fun run open to all.
“For many Malaysians, the last time they took part in a cross-country run was during their school days. This 10km race will bring back fond memories,” Pulainthiran added.
Meanwhile, Giam Say Khoon, general manager (communications and sustainability) of STM Lottery, the title sponsor for the eighth time, said the event reflects the company’s priorities – promoting healthy lifestyles, supporting grassroots development and bringing communities together.
FTAA has set an initial target of 3,500 participants, but the number is expected to rise, with 1,150 runners already registered, excluding 500 entries from STM Lottery.
“It looks like we may have to increase the number of entries as the response has been overwhelming,” said Pulainthiran.
