KUALA LUMPUR: The defence industry is being shaped by developments in artificial intelligence (AI), space technologies and cybersecurity.
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has invested in these areas as part of efforts to strengthen its defence capabilities and build partnerships.
Saeed Al Mansoori, adviser – Military & Defence Shows at ADNEC Group, said AI, aerospace and cyber capabilities are increasingly integrated into the country’s defence ecosystem.
The UAE’s approach reflects a shift in modern defence planning, where cyber capabilities, AI-driven systems and aerospace technologies play a growing role alongside traditional land, sea and air operations.
The country has invested in research, development and partnerships to support these capabilities. AI is being explored for intelligence analysis and decision-making, while space technologies are used to support surveillance, communication and navigation.
The UAE has also expanded cooperation with other countries, including in Southeast Asia, focusing on joint development and knowledge sharing.
Malaysia is among the countries with potential for collaboration. Its National Defence Industry Policy aligns with efforts to develop local capabilities, and there are opportunities to share experience in areas such as AI, cybersecurity and aerospace.
In land systems, the UAE is adapting its technologies for different operating environments. This includes adjustments for regions such as Asean, where terrain and climate differ from the Middle East.
The use of unmanned systems, including drones, is also increasing. This has led to efforts to develop counter-drone capabilities such as electronic jamming and other detection and response systems. These range from handheld devices to vehicle-mounted platforms.
Al Mansoori said developments in drone technology require continuous updates to defence systems.
Cybersecurity remains a key area, as reliance on digital systems increases exposure to cyber threats that can affect communications and data.
The UAE has focused on strengthening its cyber capabilities as part of its broader defence planning.
The defence sector is expected to continue incorporating AI, aerospace and cyber technologies as countries adapt to changing requirements.
