On Sept 8, I had the privilege of attending the launch of a remarkable book titled ‘Beyond the White Coat’ at Universiti of Malaya’s (UM) medical faculty.
The event was an inspiring gathering of distinguished guests, including the Pro Chancellor of UM, Toh Puan Datuk Seri Dr Aishah Ong, and Professor Datuk Dr Yang Faridah Abdul Aziz, Dean of the medical faculty. The editorial team, consisting of Dr Kannan Pasamanickam, Dr Madhav Kudva, and Dr Zainal Hamid, did an exceptional job in bringing together this compelling collection of personal and professional stories from 21 doctors who graduated from the university’s Faculty of Medicine, class of 1973-1978.
‘Beyond the White Coat’ is more than just a book. It is a testament to the dedication, resilience, and compassion of Malaysian doctors who have given their lives to improve the quality of healthcare in the country. Each chapter, penned by a different doctor, takes the reader on a journey from their time as medical students, through the highs and lows of their careers, and into the specialised fields where they have made significant contributions.
The book covers a wide range of insightful and deeply moving themes, including the doctors’ memories of medical school, marked by struggles, triumphs, and camaraderie; their professional milestones and achievements; and their experiences working in diverse and challenging global environments. It also delves into personal reflections on how their medical careers have shaped their lives, candid discussions about ethical dilemmas and the emotional toll of burnout, and thoughts on mentorship and the legacies they aspire to leave for future generations of doctors.
Listening to the speeches and accolades from the VVIPs present, I was struck by a profound sense of admiration for these doctors. They have not only contributed immensely to nation-building but have also dedicated their lives to improving the wellbeing of countless Malaysians.
This book is a powerful reminder that behind every white coat is a person who has sacrificed much, faced immense challenges, and yet continues to strive for excellence in patient care. The stories in ‘Beyond the White Coat’ are united by themes of perseverance, ethical practice, and a profound dedication to healing.
The doctors in the book exemplify essential qualities every medical professional should strive for:
- unwavering professional integrity that places patient wellbeing above all;
- strong ethical behaviour that upholds patient confidentiality and informed consent;
- effective communication that ensures patients and their families feel understood and supported, especially in difficult situations;
- patient-centred care that respects individual needs and preferences; and
- a commitment to continuous learning, recognising the importance of staying updated in an ever-evolving field of medicine.
What stood out most during the launch was the recurring theme that while medicine is a science, it is also an art. These doctors stressed the importance of the human touch – empathy, compassion, and humility – in the practice of medicine. They reminded us that a small act of kindness, a reassuring word, or a compassionate gesture can make a significant difference in a patient’s experience.
The doctors shared that some of their most fulfilling moments come not from grand achievements, but from small victories, such as seeing an ill patient recover, making a sad patient smile, or successfully diagnosing a challenging case.
However, the life of a doctor is not without its trials and tribulations. Many doctors face difficult patients, work long hours, and deal with the emotional burden of delivering bad news. Yet, they continue to rise above these challenges, driven by an unwavering sense of purpose and commitment to their calling.
They see each setback as an opportunity to learn and grow, fostering resilience and perseverance. The stories also highlighted the unique challenges faced by Malaysian doctors, practicing in a multiracial, multicultural, and multi-religious context.
Navigating these dynamics requires not only medical expertise but also cultural sensitivity and understanding. Despite these complexities, these doctors remain steadfast in their commitment to serve the community and uphold the highest standards of excellence.
‘Beyond the White Coat’ is more than just a collection of stories; it is a tribute to the human spirit’s resilience in the pursuit of healing. It is a powerful reminder that doctors are not just healers but also human beings who experience the full spectrum of emotions, challenges, and triumphs.
As a member of the public, I left the book launch with a deep sense of gratitude and pride for the Malaysian medical profession. These doctors are a beacon of hope and inspiration for future generations, reminding us all the crucial roles they play in our lives.
