Can’t beat Sundays with friends, watching title bout over food, drinks

It was just like the good old days before Covid-19.

Ex-colleague Bob Holmes, sent a WhatsApp message last Saturday, asking if I wanted to catch the Tyson Fury-Deontay Wilder world heavyweight boxing title fight.

Of course, I said yes. It had been a while since I watched a fight ‘live’ and knew the third encounter between the two promised to be a cracker.

The spot was at a watering hole in Kuala Lumpur, and we had to be there by 10.30am, although the fight would eventually start just before noon.

Several friends joined us to watch what turned out to be one of, if not the best, heavyweight title bouts.

Both fighters gave as good as they got. There were five knockdowns, including the crushing knockout blow in the 11th round by Fury.

It had more thrills and action than a Rocky movie!

Several moments had us wondering if the fight would last beyond the sixth round, but the two gladiators just refused to quit!

After Fury’s victory, we all agreed it was one of the best Sundays spent in recent memories.

The title fight brought back memories of days gone by when a group of us would converge at Holmes’ abode to watch some great title fights – especially during the height of Mike Tyson’s popularity.

It was more of a fellowship, as in the early days, Tyson used to finish off his opponents in double-quick time.

The rest of the days were spent having a drink or two, eating and talking about football.

With the country due to reclassify Covid-19 as endemic at the end of the month, there could be more opportunities to meet up with friends to watch other sporting action – while observing standard operating procedures, of course.

By the way, the original Movement Control Order began 578 days ago, and this is the 70th weekly edition of ‘The MCO Diaries’.

LOWEST WEEKLY DEATHS IN THREE MONTHS

There were 579 deaths in the past week, the lowest since June 26-July 2 (524).

In total, there are 27,770 deaths.

In the last seven days, we had 81,469 recoveries. That took the number of patients cleared of Covid-19 to 2,251,758.

In the same period, there were 53,555 new cases, raising the total to 2,377,033.

Globally, there are 240.8 million million cases and 4.9 million deaths.

GREAT INITIATIVE

I came across this article from Reuters. Most boxers do come from tough neighbourhoods.

BOND, JAMES BOND

If you did not know by now, Astro is screening all the James Bond movies on Channel 407 until Nov 15. Unfortunately, it did not start by showing the movies  in chronological order. Fret not. If you have the AstroGo app, you can stream them in order.

SOUNDS LEGIT

Oops.

FIRST WORLD PROBLEMS

I finally got my room air-conditioner fixed two weeks ago, and what a joy it is.

I had problems with it since late last year, but due to the various lockdowns, I could not get the technicians to come over.

The ‘uncle’ who fixed it cursed non-stop as he was upset that the people who had installed it did such a horrible job.

Just like most cooks, the experienced ones do the best job!

YUMMY PORTUGUESE DISHES

Speaking of cooks, if you are looking for something delicious, you cannot go wrong with Serani food.

Called Adreh, the stall opened on Oct 7 and is inside Kopitiam RTP (21, Jalan SS 4D/2, 47301 Petaling Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia).

The place is run by Melvyn Ramayah, who was featured on this website earlier this year.

I tried the Portuguese curry laksa and licked the bowl clean. I tapau-ed the Devil Curry, and my colleague said it was awesome.

THE BOXER

Sticking to this week’s theme, here are Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel with The Boxer.

Until next week, stay safe.
