Celcom, Digi and U Mobile told to improve services or face fines

If you have faced dropped calls, and poor reception and connectivity, a solution (hopefully) is in sight.

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is coming down hard on telecommunications companies after completing technical audits on broadband services under the Mandatory Standards for Quality of Service (MSQoS) at 3,038 locations nationwide.

The locations audited were based on the reports received by the commission.

From Jan 1-June 15, the MCMC issued 40 mandatory compliance notices, involving 449 locations.

In addition, three telecommunications companies – Celcom Axiata Berhad, Digi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd and U Mobile Sdn Bhd – were found to have failed to meet broadband service standards and improve service quality in several areas in Langkawi, including the Langkawi Highway, and other tourist spots.

The Commission demanded that the three companies make improvements to the quality of services, and the quality of the user experience.

The telecommunications companies could be slapped with RM200,000 in fines each, under Section 109 of the Communications and Multimedia Act, for failure to comply with the quality standards.

MCMC has also tightened enforcement of the MSQoS Wireless Broadband Access Service. Previously, audits were done in several provinces, but now it is across all locations.
