Celebrating Rebecca Fatima Sta Maria: A Malaysian beacon of excellence at Apec

Tan Sri Dr Rebecca Fatima Sta Maria

As Malaysians, we take immense pride in the remarkable achievements of our fellow citizens who shine on the global stage.

One such exceptional individual is Tan Sri Dr Rebecca Fatima Sta Maria, whose leadership as the immediate past executive director of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) Secretariat has brought honour and recognition to Malaysia and elevated our nation’s standing in the international arena.

Since assuming her role in 2019, Sta Maria has proven to be a trailblazer of unparalleled calibre. Her visionary leadership, unwavering dedication, and commitment to regional cooperation have resulted in an extension of her tenure – initially a three-year appointment – by another three years, a testament to the profound impact of her work.

Under her stewardship, Apec has made significant strides in advancing inclusive growth, sustainable development, and deeper economic integration among the 21 member economies, which together represent a staggering 2.9 billion people.

Her strategic direction played a crucial role in shaping policies that ensured the benefits of economic progress reached all corners of society, particularly those who needed it most.

At the recent 31st Apec Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Lima, Peru, Sta Maria’s leadership was once again on full display as she adeptly steered complex discussions that focused on empowering communities, driving digital transformation, and advancing environmental sustainability.

These key areas, crucial to the future of the Asia-Pacific region, have flourished under her guidance, with initiatives that promote equitable trade and inclusivity – values that align deeply with Malaysia’s principles of fairness and mutual respect.

Sta Maria’s journey – from her distinguished tenure as the secretary-general of Malaysia’s Ministry of International Trade and Industry to her just-concluded role at the helm of Apec – serves as an inspiring example of the exceptional calibre of Malaysia’s civil service.

Her appointment, and subsequent reappointment, to this influential international post is a proud reflection of Malaysia’s leadership talent on the global stage.

As a woman at the forefront of Apec for two terms, she is an inspirational figure who continues to break barriers and redefine what’s possible for future generations.

For the record, Datuk Muhamad Noor Yacob, Malaysia’s permanent representative to the World Trade Organisation, was the first professionally recruited executive director of the Apec Secretariat from 2010 until 2012. It is also noteworthy that another Malaysian who held such a prestigious position in an international body was Tan Sri Ajit Singh, who served as the 9th Asean secretary-general from 1993 to 1997.

This parallel not only highlights Malaysia’s rich tradition of producing globally influential leaders, but also amplifies the significance of Sta Maria’s achievements.

Though often working tirelessly behind the scenes, Sta Maria’s invaluable contributions may not always make the headlines.

However, her pivotal role in advancing Apec’s agenda deserves to be recognised and celebrated. Her efforts to foster regional economic cooperation, promote sustainability, and ensure that growth is inclusive for all have been instrumental in driving Apec’s success.

As Malaysians, we stand proud of Sta Maria and her remarkable achievements. Her leadership, dedication, and commitment to elevating Malaysia’s standing on the global stage serve as an inspiration to us all.

Let us all take a moment to salute this extraordinary lady, who has made us proud by flying the Malaysian flag high at Apec. Her exceptional journey is a beacon of excellence that encourages us to strive for greatness in all we do.

Congratulations, Tan Sri Dr Rebecca Sta Maria – your accomplishments are a source of pride for every Malaysian.

You are a true trailblazer.
