Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi could face disciplinary action for meeting Pakatan Harapan (PH) leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim this morning.
Ahmad Zahid was among several Barisan Nasional leaders who met those from Pakatan Harapan to discuss the formation of a new government.
Party members wonder if the Umno president’s action went against Articles 8 and 20.9 of the party’s constitution.
Article 8 states that the “general assembly is the highest authority in the party, and its powers and order, based on the constitution, are the foundation of the party.”
Article 20.9 reads that every Umno member must, among others, adhere to party orders.
Ahmad Zahid, at Umno general assembly on March 28, 2021, said the party remained steadfast in upholding the Supreme Council’s decision of “No Bersatu, No Anwar, No DAP” in the run-up to Malaysia’s 15th General Election.
Several Umno leaders voiced their displeasure after Ahmad Zahid and several Barisan Nasional (BN) leaders met PH leaders at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur this morning.
It came after Malaysia’s general election resulted in a hung parliament.
PH secured the most parliamentary seats (82), but it was not enough to form a simple majority of 111 out of the 220 seats contested.
Perikatan Nasional won 73 seats, while BN suffered a humiliating drubbing, securing only 30 seats.
Anwar said he was pleased with the outcome of the meeting this morning as Istana Negara extended the deadline for coalition and party leaders to submit their proposals for an alliance by 2pm tomorrow.
Associate Professor Dr Azeem Fazwan Ahmad Farouk, in March 2021, told Twentytwo13 that Umno would work with anyone, including Anwar and the DAP, to ensure it remained part of the government.
In Perak, PH and BN got the ball rolling with their collaboration to govern the state, with BN’s Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad sworn in as the state’s 15th menteri besar this evening.
