The status of the ‘vacant’ Attorney-General (AG) and Solicitor-General’s (SG) posts was highlighted in the Dewan Rakyat today.
M. Kulasegaran (PH – Ipoh Barat) said the government was now unable to obtain the views of the AG and SG.
“Isn’t the naming of these candidates important? This should have been done weeks ago, to get consent from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong,” said Kulasegaran.
“The delay shows the ineffectiveness of this government. This weak government is delaying such an important decision.
“Is it because the ‘Court Cluster’ is involved … and the AG (Idrus) is not adhering to the demands of these people?”
Kulasegaran added that by not renewing Idrus’ contract or naming a new AG, this was tantamount to a “major negligence by the prime minister”.
The Malaysian Bar had also questioned the delay in naming the AG after questions were asked about Idrus’ two-year tenure that was supposed to end yesterday. He was appointed on March 6, 2020.
The Prime Minister’s Office had not responded to queries pertaining to the matter. It remains unclear if Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob would be making an announcement on the issue soon.
This had led to speculation that certain quarters were eager to get rid of Idrus to ensure that court cases involving certain personalities would be dropped.
