The Mizoram Girls team has been a standout in the renamed Migrant Domestic Workers’ (MDW) Futsal League in Singapore.
Up until Feb 19, the team enjoyed a 100 per cent win record and remains the team with the most technical and tactical qualities in the league.
The team was founded in July 2022 by its captain, Lal Rin Zuali. Zuali then roped in long-time friend, Chin Ngaih Ching, and they then asked their friends to join them. They even posted on Facebook, calling on those who were interested in playing football.
The team has been training almost every Sunday at an open field in Mattar Road, joined by several Indonesians, and players from Manipur, India.
Mizoram Girls has one of the top scorers of the league – Dimsangkim (main image), a player who had from the start, stood out from the rest, due to her technical prowess.
She started playing football at the age of 10. The game was her escape from her problems.
She credits her father, who occasionally played the game, for his support for her passion.
In India, she played for her village team, but couldn’t play as often as she would have liked to, as she had to go to New Delhi to be a domestic helper for her uncle.
Dimsangkim’s favourite football club is Real Madrid, and her favourite player is Cristiano Ronaldo.
She moved to Singapore about two years ago and has served three employers. Her employment with her first boss was cut short when she had to go back to India to attend her grandmother’s funeral.
Her second boss meanwhile, migrated to Malaysia. She is currently working for a North Indian family.
Her current employer knows that she plays football and the family has been encouraging her to be active in the sport.
Heading into the last match on March 19, Dimsangkim is tied with Van Rem Mawl, with 14 goals each, in the league.
Mizoram Girls FC is in a three-horse race for the league title, with the other two contenders being Golden Myanmar and We Love Myanmar FC.
