Don’t fear artificial intelligence

With the introduction of artificial intelligence, commonly known as AI, in everyday life, we have seen this emerging technology advancing and replacing humans in some jobs.

If you are not familiar with the term AI, it basically involves computers or machines performing tasks that are normally performed by humans.

In Malaysia, some restaurants have robots performing simple tasks of delivering food to tables, instead of human workers, due to labour shortages. The question is, is AI a larger threat to humans and society than any of us could ever imagine?

Recently, the popular artificial intelligence application ChatGPT received significant backlash when some students misused it to cheat in their exams, and complete their assignments and homework.

Studies showed that students were taking advantage of ChatGPT’s powerful AI technology, and teachers and educators are concerned by this growing trend.

If you are not familiar with ChatGPT, it is an AI application developed by an American company named OpenAI. ChatGPT is able to generate answers to almost any question, including answering multiple-choice exam questions, completing essays, and solving mathematical equations.

There are also reports of various universities in America testing ChatGPT with the same exam questions given to their students. Results showed that ChatGPT was able to generate answers and pass the exams, including business, law, and medical exams. Several schools and universities in America, Australia, and France, have imposed a ban on ChatGPT.

Hong Kong-based robotics company, Hanson Robotics Ltd, is known for creating human-like AI robots named Sophia. Sophia made its first public appearance in 2016 and is the world’s first robot with a Saudi Arabian citizenship. Sophia is human-sized, with a human-like face, skin, and expression, and is able to have simple conversations. Hanson Robotics hopes robots like Sophia can connect with people and assist in industries such as healthcare and education.

In 2017, Elon Musk tweeted that “AI will be the best or worst thing ever for humanity.” Many are afraid of AI. Many fear AI will take over their jobs.

In my opinion, AI will not take over and replace humans. AI will complement humans.

I hope Malaysia will invest more in new technologies and AI. I hope the authorities and businesses will take action and make changes, using AI to be more efficient and competitive.
