Durian season in full swing, but let’s not overindulge

This year’s bumper harvest has driven prices of durian down. However, the excitement over low prices should not overshadow the importance of mindful eating and maintaining a balanced diet for our overall health.

Durian season in full swing, but let’s not overindulge

Durian season is in full swing, and Malaysians are in a frenzy over this beloved fruit.

This year’s bumper harvest has driven prices down, especially for the sought-after ‘Musang King’ variety, making it more affordable than ever.

With corporations hosting durian parties, and retail sellers offering ‘all-you-can-eat’ buffets, it’s easy to get carried away.

While durians are a good source of nutrients, they are also high in calories and carbohydrates. Consuming them in moderation is essential, particularly for those with health conditions, like diabetes.

The excitement over low prices should not overshadow the importance of mindful eating and maintaining a balanced diet for our overall health.

Durians are rich in simple sugars – sucrose, fructose, and glucose – which can contribute to weight gain if consumed excessively. Research has shown that an average 1kg durian contains around 1,350 calories, which is about 68 per cent of the daily recommended intake for an average adult. Even a single seed (about 40g) has 54 calories.

Durians also have a high glycaemic index, meaning they can significantly raise blood sugar levels within a short period of time. This is a crucial consideration for those with diabetic-related ailments.

As we relish the ‘king of fruits’ this season, let’s remember that moderation and discipline are key to healthy eating. Enjoy the nutritious and unique taste of durian, but be mindful of its high sugar content and caloric value.

Happy feasting, but let’s do it wisely!
