The government should impose a moratorium on undocumented migrants and foreigners during the movement restriction order period by not arresting them.
Malaysian Bar president Salim Bashir said there could be a concern among such groups in not wanting to seek treatment for fear of arrest as they are without valid travel documents or work permits.
“We are concerned that the reluctance to seek medical attention will increase the possibility of Covid-19 infections among their communities in Malaysia and the general public.
“We also call upon the government to consider waiving hospital treatment charges for these foreigners during this period.
“We want the foreigners to be able to walk in to hospitals and get themselves screened for free.”
Salim also hoped the police and the prison authorities will carry out regular sanitisation in lock-ups and prison cells.
“We call upon the authorities to maintain hygiene and avoid over-crowding in detention centres throughout Malaysia,” he added.
Malaysia had recorded two deaths and 790 Covid-19 cases as at 5pm yesterday.
The government’s movement control order which came into effect yesterday is aimed at restricting the movements of people to curb the Covid-19 pandemic.
