Emanuel Macedo de Medeiros is the sole candidate for the Sport Integrity Global Alliance (SIGA) Global chief executive officer’s position, en route to cementing his second term with the Geneva-based international body that promotes integrity and good governance.
The experienced administrator, who spearheaded the inception of SIGA since Nov 2015, was the sole candidate for the post, ahead of the second term (2022-2026).
SIGA, in a statement, said: “Due to the nature and responsibilities of the role, the election of the Global CEO of SIGA requires reinforced legitimacy.”
“Accordingly, as prescribed by the SIGA Statutes, the election by the Council will be followed by ratification by the General Assembly (a qualified majority of two thirds).”
The election is scheduled on Jan 20, while the ratification by the General Assembly will take place on Jan 31.
Having started his career as a lawyer in 1993, de Medeiros played a leading role in several national, and international sports organisations.
After six years as secretary-general of the Portuguese Football League, he co-founded and led the Association of European Professional Football Leagues (EPFL) as CEO for a decade.
He was also one of the founding fathers and driving forces behind the creation of the World League Association, having been elected its CEO in February 2012.
From 2002 to 2014, de Medeiros integrated several committees and working groups within Uefa and Fifa.
He also holds a seat at the European Union’s Expert Group on Good Governance in Sport, since 2011. In March 2012, he was appointed Ambassador for Sports Ethics by the Portuguese government.
From 2014 to 2018, he acted as chief executive officer of the International Centre for Sport Security (ICSS) Europe.
In addition, de Medeiros is a member of the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, Switzerland.
