‘Follow No One’: G.S. Gill Sports reinvents itself as sports incubator, championing Malaysian brands, creators, communities

Amid the rows of shops selling fabric, carpets, and nasi kandar along Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Kuala Lumpur, stands an institution that has withstood the test of time.

Founded by Tan Sri Gurdial Singh Gill in 1946, G.S. Gill Sports began by selling bicycles and accessories before becoming the licensor of adidas in 1952. That move turned it into a household name and one of Malaysia’s biggest sports retailers.

After more than seven decades in the industry and facing stiff competition, especially from online players, G.S. Gill Sports believes it must evolve. Its chief marketing officer, Simran Kaur, recently gave Twentytwo13 a sneak peek of the company’s new brand direction – ‘Follow No One’.

Marking the launch of ‘Follow No One’ is the three-day G.S. Gill Merdeka Sports Festival, from Aug 30 to Sept 1, in conjunction with the nation’s independence day. The event will take place just a stone’s throw from G.S. Gill Sports’ headquarters, with Dataran Merdeka as its historical backdrop.

The company hopes this movement will reposition it as more than just a retailer. From heritage to hype, it will evolve into a sports incubator and cultural hub to champion Malaysian-made brands, creators, and communities.

“This is not a rebrand – it’s a reinvention,” said Simran.

“‘Follow No One’ is a call to disrupt, to back local, and to move with originality. G.S. Gill Sports is here to help the next generation of champions create their own path, not follow someone else’s.

“We’ve supported generations of athletes – now we want to be the launchpad for the next ones.”

G.S. Gill Sports chief executive officer, Havey Singh, added: “For nearly 80 years, G.S. Gill Sports has represented this movement. But the kind of movement we’re backing now isn’t just physical – it’s cultural.

“We’re creating a platform for bold, unapologetic, driven, and passionate talent in Malaysia – people who are building the future of sport, not just playing in it. ‘Follow No One’ is our way of saying the next chapter of Malaysian sport starts here.”

The three-day festival, from 10am to 7pm, will feature:
● Family-friendly skill challenges and mini competitions
● Brand showcases and pop-ups from Malaysian sports brands
● Free face painting, balloon giveaways, and community games

Simran credited the G.S. Gill Merdeka Sports Festival to “the support of our incredible brand partners who believe in the power of local sport, movement, and community.”

“We are proud to work alongside a growing list of emerging Malaysian brands and organisations such as Kualesa, Gears4Skills, Proactive Sports Academy, Paper Shoot, KLCC Runners Group, Kita Pelari Malaysia, Rotary Club of Hartamas, and Fruit Plus.

“Each of our partners represents a different piece of Malaysia’s sporting future – from grassroots development to global innovation. This festival is as much about building community as it is about showcasing bold, local talent.”

If executed well, G.S. Gill Sports’ bold move could help elevate Malaysia’s sports industry, giving local players the chance to compete with global brands – in line with the government’s push to shift from ‘Made in Malaysia’ to ‘Made by Malaysians’.
