FTKLAA appeals to Sports Commissioner’s Office to be allowed to vote at Malaysia Athletics’ AGM

Federal Territory Kuala Lumpur Athletics Association (FTKLAA) has written to the Sports Commissioner’s Office (SCO) requesting permission to vote during Malaysia Athletics’ (MA) annual general meeting (AGM) on June 15.

One of Malaysia’s most successful and active athletics associations, FTKLAA must merge with Putrajaya and Labuan’s associations under MA’s amended constitution, which the SCO approved on Jan 15.

However, MA’s AGM on June 15 is less than three months away, and there may not be time for the three associations to form a new body.

This led FTKLAA to write to the SCO, seeking an extension, as it believes the amended constitution should only take effect after the AGM.

On Feb 17, an SCO officer told Twentytwo13: “When the amendments to the association’s name and constitution were submitted to us, we informed them that the changes would take effect after the elections.”

FTKLAA president, Datuk Seri Dr V. Pulainthiran, confirmed the state body had written an appeal and said: “We are still waiting to hear from the Sports Commissioner’s Office.”

An officer with the SCO confirmed receiving the appeal but declined to comment on whether FTKLAA would be granted its request.

The June 15 AGM is pivotal as the national body is to hold elections for its new office bearers. Under the amended constitution, the victors will serve for four years instead of three.

Twentytwo13 revealed on March 13 that the national body removed its deputy president, Datuk Fadzil A. Bakar, from his post.

Fadzil confirmed he received a letter informing him of his removal but declined to comment further, as the matter is now in the hands of his lawyer.

The move to replace Fadzil came after he told this website on Feb 19 that a special committee he headed to ‘review the expenses for the Malam Anugerah Olahraga Malaysia 2024 (Awards Night)’ found that a council member had submitted claims of RM18,610 as payment for the venue, even though a sponsor had already paid the hotel in full.

MA president Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim denied any financial irregularities, claiming he had stopped payment to the council member and that there would be a second investigation. There has been no news regarding the outcome of that investigation.
