Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo at the AGOS GBS Summit 2024 in Petaling Jaya on Sept 12, 2024.

Generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI)-based applications can act as a catalyst for more efficient and transparent services in the government and private sectors through strategic investment and implementation.

“The Malaysia Centre4IR has projected that Gen AI could generate up to US$113.4 billion in productive capacity for the Malaysian economy,” Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo said in response to a question from Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari (PH-Gombak) in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday.

Amirudin had earlier asked about the potential of Gen AI, which could help enhance the efficiency of services in the government and private sectors.

“Among the capabilities of Gen AI are the automation of routine tasks, unique interaction experiences with Malaysians, and improved decision-making efficiency. Additionally, data analysis driven by AI technology can identify current trends, helping the government anticipate citizens’ needs and provide more efficient energy resources.”

Gobind added that the establishment of the National AI Office (NAIO), which will be launched at the end of this year, will harness Gen AI technology by fostering innovation, promoting cross-sector collaborations, and supporting AI adoption.

“Furthermore, NAIO will lead initiatives that leverage AI to strengthen the digital economy, enhance public service performance, and contribute to sustainable development.”

The ministry, through the National Digital Department, is also exploring the potential of generative AI that can be applied in government and private sectors.

This includes process automation and data management, customer service, content development, education and training, data analysis and forecasting, as well as cybersecurity.
