The man Liverpool fans hope would be their future manager, returns to Anfield tomorrow (11pm), but in the opposition dugout.
Steven Gerrard, who carried the club on his shoulders for 17 years, took over Aston Villa last month, following the sacking of Dean Smith.
Gerrard had cut his teeth coaching in Scotland, leading Rangers to the league title last season.
Before moving north of the border, Gerrard was part of the coaching staff at Liverpool’s academy from January 2017 to May 2018.
Since becoming Villa manager, the team has won three times and suffered one defeat. Smith only won three matches from 11 games, suffering seven defeats, and one draw.
Although Villa is 10th in the standings, recent performances suggest it will not be easy for second-placed Liverpool.
And with Gerrard urging the team on, it is sure to be a cracker.
Jurgen Klopp’s men have scored 13 times in their last four league games. It created history on Wednesday morning (Malaysian time) by beating AC Milan to become the first English team to win all its Champions League group games.
As such, it should start as favourites, but no matter the outcome, Gerrard can be assured of a warm welcome.
Elsewhere, league leader Manchester City hosts Wolves tomorrow (8.30pm).
Wolves was unlucky to lose to Liverpool last week after conceding the only goal in injury time.
Tottenham’s match against Brighton on Sunday (10pm) was postponed due to several Covid-19 cases in the London team’s camp.
