Transport Minister Anthony Loke says his ministry will study the road tax structure for electric vehicles as the tax holiday for EVs will end in 2025.
“We have a tax holiday (for electric vehicles) until 2025,” said Loke, in the Dewan Rakyat this afternoon.
“I will get my officials from the ministry to study how we want to tax EVs (electric vehicles). We need a comprehensive study.
“This is because the (road tax) structure has to be in line with our policy of using electric vehicles … there must be incentives, (such as) competitive road tax, and charging stations. The whole EV system must be there for us to encourage the usage of EVs.
“We will look at how to calculate the road tax for EVs,” the Seremban MP added, replying to a question by Jimmy Puah Wee Tse (Pakatan Harapan-Tebrau).
Loke also said his ministry was looking at allowing drivers and riders to renew their licences for up to 10 years, instead of five years, currently.
He was aware of suggestions to do away with the renewal of driving or riding licences, but said this would impact the government’s coffers.
“I’ve asked the officials to come up with a paper to allow licence holders to renew their licences for 10 years. As of now, it’s (a maximum of) five years (renewal).
“By allowing licence holders to renew every 10 years, we will be able to offer a small discount, to encourage the rakyat to renew their licences,” he added.
