Locals Gavin Green and Nicholas Fung are the only Malaysians to survive the cut at the Maybank Championship at Saujana Golf and Country Club.
The duo, part of a 13-strong band of Malaysian golfers, however, have much to do to catch Thomas Pieters of Belgium.
Fan favourite Ernie Els also made the cut when he shot a 70 today for a two-day total of six-under 138 to lie two shots behind Pieters.
“Today was better than yesterday where I kept missing opportunities that left me frustrated,” said world No. 225 Green, who shot a two-under 70 for a total of even 144.
“I need to work on my putts and release and try to improve (over the weekend).
“I have India (next week) as well,” added Green, who will play in Gurugram, Haryana, at next week’s Indian Open.
Fung said he was happy to make the cut but lamented the tough conditions.
“The pin placements were tough but I’m happy with my round,” said the Sabahan, whose 1-over 73 means he is tied for 24th on 3-under 141.
Four-time major champion Els of South Africa closed out a 70 today to go with his 68 yesterday.
Like, Fung, he wasn’t too happy with the pin placements and swirling winds.
“I’m only two behind and in this course, if you are within three or four shots on Sunday, you have a chance,” said Els, who is the Team International captain for this year’s Presidents Cup.
“Today’s pin placement was tough, it was very warm and the wind didn’t help.
“I feel good about my game. I like the golf course and have to keep grinding away.”
Asked about the huge crowd which was following him, Els said: “I have a lot of fans here and I wish I had made a couple more birdies.
“We would have had a bigger turnout then. Maybe we will have the biggest gallery if we are in contention (on Sunday).”
