I’m going to miss my mutton varuval this Deepavali

Happy Deepavali folks!

Hopefully, everyone is having a safe celebration and following all the standard operating procedures (SOPs).

Covid-19 has hit all of us in one way or another. It is best to be cautious when visiting your family.

The disease has affected many people who have lost jobs or had to take pay cuts. Some have been motivated to try new ventures to eke out a living.

Being selfish, the thing I miss most this Deepavali is the open houses – I do love mutton varuval … just saying.

Amid the joy of light triumphing over evil, here are some grim statistics about Covid-19.

Malaysia hit a milestone on Tuesday when it reached 300 deaths from Covid-19. Up till yesterday, we have had 304 fatalities – an increase of 25 in the past seven days.

Among those who died was a one-year-old boy (patient 31,272). He was the 290th death. In October, a one-year-old girl (patient 12,432) was the 140th fatality.

The number of cases reached 45,095 yesterday, an increase of 6,906 since last Friday. We are likely to surpass 50,000 cases next week.

Our recovery rate improved slightly, up to 73.1 per cent from 69.1 per cent with 32,969 recoveries.

This is partly due to two good days – Monday (1,345) and last Saturday (1,029) which were only the third time recoveries reached four digits.

The world passed the 50 million-case mark on Sunday. The total number now stands at 53.2 million. Fatalities are just above 1.3 million.

Meanwhile, a study shows one in five Covid-19 patients develop mental illness within 90 days..

A vaccine and cure can’t come quickly enough.

Anyway, today is the 242nd day of the Movement Control Order and this is the 22nd weekly edition of ‘The MCO Diaries’.

PETROL STATION BLUES

Before Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob clarified the rules about recording your details at petrol stations, this was the reaction of many Malaysians.

Ismail Sabri yesterday also announced a change in the ruling to allow three people from the same household to travel in a car. Hopefully, this means more than two members of a family can now eat together in a restaurant.

The government also made another U-turn when it finally allowed public and private childcare centres or nurseries to operate during CMCO.

Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Rina Mohd Harun, however, said they must obtain the approval of the respective state Social Welfare Departments and follow standard operating procedures.

Earlier this week, this website highlighted how childcare and nurseries were hit hard as they were ordered closed. We also highlighted how 500,000 kids may not be mentally and academically ready to enter Year One.
