The Johor Hockey Association (JHA) has nominated AirAsia Group Bhd executive chairman Datuk Kamarudin Meranun and the Regent of Pahang Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah Al-Sultan Abdullah for the Malaysia Hockey Confederation (MHC) president and deputy president’s post respectively.
This confirms Twentytwo13‘s report on Oct 12 quoting JHA deputy president Datuk Manjit Majid Abdullah that the southern state would nominate Kamarudin, Tengku Hassanal and several other prominent figures for the Nov 16 elections.
Former international Datuk Ow Soon Kooi was surprisingly nominated for the vice-president as well. Ow, who once served as MHC vice-president, refused to comment about his nomination.
Tengku Hassanal has also been nominated as deputy president by the Selangor Hockey Association.
It has been widely reported that MHC president Datuk Seri Subahan Kamal and his deputy Prof Datuk Dr S. Shamala will not seek re-election if the Malaysian Tigers fail to qualify for Tokyo 2020.
The national team, coached by Roelant Oltmans, must win the two play-offs against Great Britain on Nov 2 and 3 to qualify for next year’s Olympics.
