Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar, the Sultan of Johor, has been selected as the 17th Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
Keeper of the Rulers’ Seal, Tan Sri Syed Danial Syed Ahmad, in a statement today, also announced that the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah, will be the Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
The decision was made following the 263rd (Special) Meeting of the Conference of Rulers at Istana Negara this morning. Sultan Ibrahim will begin his five-year reign as Malaysia’s King, beginning Jan 31, 2024.
The meeting, chaired by the Sultan of Terengganu, Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin, was attended by all the Malay Rulers, except Kelantan and Perlis.
Sultan Ibrahim had yesterday expressed his appreciation to Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, whose reign as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong ends in January. Al-Sultan Abdullah is the Sultan of Pahang.
Al-Sultan Abdullah expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the Malay Rulers for their support during his time as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
During Al-Sultan Abdullah’s reign, Malaysia saw the swearing-in of three prime ministers (Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, and Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim), following a protracted political imbroglio. He also steered the nation during the Covid-19 pandemic that disrupted economies and lives, worldwide.
Al-Sultan Abdullah also upheld the spirit of syura (consultation) during these challenging times, taking into account the views of the other Malay Rulers.
