“Last-minute Malaysians” is a common lament among many of us, including me.
Just this once, however, I am not annoyed or complaining about such a situation.
In fact, I’m just delighted that a number of friends came forward at the eleventh hour to donate towards Twentytwo13’s Project 60.1. As such, the fund shot up to a total of RM13,910.
When we launched the project on Nov 1, the target was a mere RM5,000 but the overwhelming response saw the fund grow and grow.
Twentytwo13 salutes everyone who has contributed either in the form of money or moral support during these trying times. Every little bit helps.
The money will be used by Women’s Aid Organisation (WAO) for its programmes to help women and children who are victims of domestic violence.
I will walk a distance of 25km on Nov 28 to signify the struggles these victims go through in walking away from the abuse to start life anew.
Twentytwo13 managing editor Pearl Lee commends the effort, adding it was in the true spirit of the news website – appreciating people’s perspectives while breaking boundaries.
This is how we do things. It’s not just about documenting but going the extra mile to make a difference. RM13,910 may be a small amount to some but to us, it’s a big deal to get things rolling.
Since its inception in 2018, Twentytwo13 has organised community events in a bid to make a difference. In 2018, the news website organised Sila Lari, Jangan Duduk 5km Fun Run to get families and friends to get involved in an active lifestyle. Proceeds from the fun run was handed to the Federal Territory Kuala Lumpur Amateur Athletics Association.
Last year, Twentytwo13 and the Malaysia Mixed Martial Arts Association organised Fight For Change 2019. The event raised RM31,000 which was handed to the National Press Club of Malaysia’s Journalist Welfare Fund.
When asked of her thoughts, Pearl said: “Our two previous events were held in November and we end this year with another project on Nov 28. Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, we are still able to do good without the pomp and fanfare.”
Twentytwo13 readers and other fellow Malaysians can still donate directly to Women’s Aid Organisation at CIMB Bank Berhad 80-0238299-7 (Reference: Children’s Programme).
