The 2025 FIM World Supercross Championship will make a thrilling debut in Malaysia this October, and a Malaysian rider may line up on the world stage.

Stadium Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur will host the opening round of the international series on Oct 18.

The announcement has sparked anticipation across the Malaysian motorsport community, not least due to the possibility of homegrown talent joining the starting grid.

Though the official rider line-ups will be revealed in the lead-up to the championship, industry insiders suggest that a Malaysian entry is under serious consideration – a development that would mark a proud moment for the sport in the region.

“Bringing this race to Kuala Lumpur is a monumental moment for Malaysian sports,” said Shamil Yusof, chief executive director of local promoter Data Sukan Sdn Bhd.

“As the only Southeast Asian nation to host this prestigious event, we’re incredibly proud to demonstrate our capability to stage world-class competitions.”

“It’s a testament to Malaysia’s rising status in global sports, and we look forward to providing a thrilling experience for fans, showcasing the vibrant energy of our nation to the world.”

The 2025 season features stops across five continents – Argentina (South America), Canada (North America), South Africa (Africa), Australia (Oceania) and Malaysia (Asia).

Kuala Lumpur, Buenos Aires, Vancouver, and Cape Town are first-time host cities. Australia’s Gold Coast is no stranger to Supercross racing.

Kuala Lumpur’s inclusion reflects the series’ mission to expand its global footprint. But for local fans, all eyes will be on whether a Malaysian rider takes to the grid.

“This is also an incredibly exciting period for motorsport lovers in Malaysia and Southeast Asia, with the prestigious Malaysian Moto Grand Prix following just a week after. It’s a fantastic double-header for the region,” Shamil said.

Riders like Eli Tomac and Shane McElrath claimed top honours in 2024, but a homegrown Malaysian contender could provide a new chapter in the sport’s evolution – and a hero for local fans to cheer on when the gate drops at Stadium Merdeka.
