I would like to wish Happy Mother’s Day to mothers and educators.
It may seem strange to wish educators on this day, but they play the part of ‘mothers’ while caring for those under their supervision.
With Teachers’ Day eight days away, it seems appropriate to put them together.
After all, mothers are exceptional educators – they teach us to love, have empathy and be brave.
Being an educator for over 30 years, I understand more than others why those in the industry are like mothers.
For one, we spend eight hours a day with other people’s children.
During that time, we have to impart knowledge – book smarts, living skills and everything in between – to help them survive in this world. That is something a mother does.
We are also the ones many come to with their problems or when they need advice.
Like mothers, educators must be firm yet loving, decisive yet flexible, and open to new ideas.
I am lucky to be a mother to three fabulous children aged 36, 26 and 18.
Although they have successful lives, I cannot stop worrying about their futures.
I keep tabs on what they are doing without being too intrusive. They know I will be there if they ever need my help.
The same goes for my former students. I am always ready to lend a helping hand.
Family is important to me, and one thing I know – a mother’s work never ends.
I am always available to my children and my former students, even though many left my care years ago.
That is a culture I bring to my school – Global Oak Tree Scholars International School – that we are all family.
The students and staff know they can always come to me for anything – just like a mother.
That is why I always say I have three biological children but many hundreds of others whom I have taught along the way.
My responsibility as a mother goes beyond that of my children. It is a bond I share with my students and staff.
Mother’s Day is not just for mothers. It is for educators, too.
