Sidney Tung, an instrumental figure in the Malaysian bowling fraternity for decades, passed away on June 3 but his legacy in bowling will be preserved.
The Malaysian Tenpin Bowling Congress (MTBC) plans to immortalise Tung by naming a bowling competition after him, among others.
“I have thought about it and we plan to create an event named after him (Tung). We did the same with (former official) Peter Yap,” said MTBC president Datuk Dr P.S. Nathan.
“I will also propose that Sidney be part of the Olympic Council of Malaysia’s (OCM) Hall of Fame.”
Dr Nathan said this during the recording of BFM’s sports programme Bar None which will be aired tonight (9pm).
He added Tung was passionate about the sport and he was a familiar among OCM officials, Youth and Sports Ministry officials, and reporters.
“He never ruffled any feathers.”
Dr Nathan, who has been MTBC president since 1974, had worked with Tung when he was the secretary-general since the late 70s. Tung served the national body until 2013.
Tung was diagnosed with nasopharyngeal cancer in 2004 and suffered a stroke last year. He passed away at a nursing home, at the age of 74.
Tung’s achievements include being sport manager for the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur and chief executive officer for the 2003 World Championships.
Dr Nathan revealed Tung even gave up his job as a draftsman to join MTBC full time.
“I don’t think Sidney spent more time with anyone than me. He never took a single day off. Never,” he added.
