NPC gives out essential kits, allowances to help journos battle Covid-19

Media personnel who are actively reporting on the ground are reminded to protect themselves as they provide news updates to the masses throughout the Movement Control Order.

National Press Club of Malaysia (NPC) president Datuk Ahirudin Attan, while thanking journalists, photographers, videographers and editorial staff for their work, stressed it is important they maintain good hygiene and practise physical distancing at all times.

Following the outbreak of Covid-19 in Malaysia, the National Press Club has started several initiatives to assist members of the Press through its Journalist Welfare Fund.

Funds raised have been used to buy essential items, including face masks, hand santisers and soap, for active media personnel and to give allowances to the elders and those in need within the fraternity.

“This is our contribution to members and non-members alike. In times like these, we must stand united and help as many media personnel as possible,” said Ahirudin who runs news website The Mole.

“I’m glad that we have had good Samaritans who have contributed to our cause. Also, this is our way of thanking our media brothers and sisters for their good work.

“Just remember to stay safe at all times and maintain physical distancing.”

Media personnel pick up their kits as NPC deputy president Haresh Deol keys in their details in his laptop.

Some 42 essential kits were given out to members of the Press just before Health Director-General Datuk Seri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah’s press conference at the Health Ministry at 5.30 pm. More kits will be distributed soon.

The club has also been giving out allowances of between RM300 and RM500 to the elderly and those in need who still serve or have served a media outfit – regardless if they are an NPC member or not.

Those who want to contribute can channel their funds to The National Press Club Malaysia (1992) AmBank Islamic (Account number: 023-202-200219-3).
