Dr Mohd Khairi Zawi has applied to leave the National Sports Institute (NSI) by the end of this month.
The NSI chief executive officer, who is in Singapore, has no intention of extending his contract which ends on Jan 14, 2019.
It is learnt that he submitted his permohonan pemendekan notice so that he will be able to return to his previous job at UKM by Dec 1.
Khairi is an associate professor at UKM’s Centre of Education Leadership and Policy.
The PhD holder clocked in as ISN chief on Jan 15, 2016.
Some had questioned the move of bringing the academician into the institute while others felt the expert in physical education, motor control and biomechanics and human movement science would be a valuable asset.
The NSI has hogged the limelight for the wrong reasons in recent times.
Last year, three national shooters – Muslifah Zulkifli, Nur Suryani Taibi and Nur Ayuni Abdul Halim – sued NSI after they were dropped from the Podium Programme.
The programme also came under fire for failing to achieve its objectives at this year’s Commonwealth Games and Asian Games.
