Of cybersecurity, billion-dollar investment into Malaysia, and celebrating young innovators

Winners of the MYCentre4IR Impact Challenge 2024 at the prize giving ceremony on Aug 29, 2024.

The Digital Ministry has been kept busy with several significant milestones over the past seven days – namely with the Cyber Security Act coming into force on Aug 26, and India’s Eros Investments injecting US$1 billion into Malaysia’s first AI Park and movie studio.

We take a look at some of the key events.

Cyber Security Act comes into force

The Cyber Security Act is a new legislation aimed at enhancing Malaysia’s cybersecurity readiness through compliance with specific measures, standards, and processes in managing digital threats.

Four regulations – Cyber Security (Compounding of Offences) Regulations 2024, Cyber Security (Notification on Cyber Security Incident) Regulations 2024, Cyber Security (Risk Assessment and Audit) Regulations 2024 and Cyber Security (Licensing of Cyber Security Service Provider) Regulations 2024 – have also come into effect.

This Act also provides for the functions and duties of the heads of the National Critical Information Infrastructure (NCII) sectors and NCII entities, including the management of cybersecurity threats and cybersecurity incidents affecting NCII.

The 11 NCII sectors are government; banking and finance; transportation; defence and national security; information, communication and digital; healthcare services; water; sewerage and waste management; energy, agriculture and plantation; trade, industry, economy; and, science, technology and innovation.

The National Cyber Security Agency will review and reassess the NCII entities, as the agency anticipates an increase from the current 299 entities, over time.

India’s Eros Investments to inject US$1 billion into Malaysia’s first AI Park, movie studio

Malaysia’s Minister of Digital, Gobind Singh Deo, who accompanied Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on his official trip to New Delhi from Aug 19-21, attended a series of meetings with several decision-makers of major Indian companies, including the chief executive officer of Immerso AI-IP, Ali Hussein. Immerso AI-IP is part of Eros Investments Group.

In a statement on Aug 29, Gobind said he was briefed on Immerso AI-IP’s AI Park and its AI movie studio – the first to be built in Malaysia. Both ventures will see an expected investment of US$1 billion, creating 5,000 jobs over the next five years.

In January, Eros Investments announced the launch of Immerso AI Park in partnership with the Government of Gujarat.

Celebrating young innovators

On Aug 29, Gobind was in Penang, where he spoke to young innovators involved in the MYCentre4IR Impact Challenge 2024. The challenge was organised by Intel Malaysia and MYDIGITAL Corporation. Gobind was also given a tour of Intel’s HEC Experience Centre and Advanced Analytics Research Centre 2, which specialises in the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) tools across businesses, powered by Intel.

Gobind was impressed by some of the projects showcased in the competition. They ranged from healthcare to safety, and food waste reduction, involving participants from secondary schools and universities competing in two categories – the over 18 category, and those aged between 13 and 18.

The winner of the above 18 category was Iris Yan Ning from Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang, with the project ‘Paediatric Allergy Life Saver’. Chang Su Yuan, Choong Zhi Sheng, and Wong Xiu Yan from Universiti Malaysia Perlis, came in second with their ‘Heart and Lung Sound Classification Using Deep Learning’ entry. Hoh Chew Wen from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur came in third (ARAI: A cost-effective AR+AI-powered home workout system with real-time feedback).

Students from Penang’s Han Chiang High School dominated the 13-18-year-old category. Justin Goh, Hii Zan Yi, and Low Hong Zhi came in first with their project ‘Auto-Focusing Cancer Detection Complex’. Their schoolmates, Ong Chong Yao, and Mok Zi Xuan came in second with their ‘AI Storage Sentinel’ project. Ong Jayden, Khoo Pin Hong, and Benjamin Tay Lee Herng, also from Han Chiang High School, were placed third with their ‘De-Violentisation’ project.
