Residents in 61 people’s housing schemes (PPR) in Kuala Lumpur will be able to buy cheaper chickens and eggs beginning tomorrow, for the next six months.
Chickens will be priced at RM3 per bird, while those who purchase 10 Grade B eggs will be able to enjoy savings of 50 sen.
Dubbed ‘Jualan Rakyat MyGrocer @Wilayah’ the initiative – by the Federal Territories Ministry – is supported by Kuala Lumpur City Hall, Federal Territories Ministry, and Labuan Corporation. A total of RM3.48 million has been set aside for the programme.
Some 147,000 residents living in 61 public housing schemes in KL will be able to enjoy savings of up to 14.29 per cent for every purchase of one bird and 10 eggs.
The scheme is also open to 19,000 residents from the B40 group in Labuan.
The current ceiling price for chicken is set at RM9.40 per kg, while the ceiling price for Grade A eggs is 45 sen per egg, and 43 sen, and 41 sen for Grades B and C, respectively.
Federal Territories Minister, Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim, said only Malaysians were entitled to enjoy the discounts. In Labuan, these items will be sold by traders handpicked by Labuan Corporation.
“The programme will kick off at the Sri Johor Public Housing in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur, from 4pm to 6pm, tomorrow. We hope the people will grab this golden opportunity,” said Shahidan.
“The government and the FT Ministry is committed to finding methods to reduce the economic burden and cushion the impact of inflation among the people. We also hope to reduce the burden of the B40 group in the Federal Territories,” he added.
Last month, veteran economist Tan Sri Ramon Navaratnam said radical changes, including forward open market policies, must be introduced as the country is in a state of “crisis”.
He said the government must think outside of the box and not rely on old methods to address the rising cost in food prices that is being felt by Malaysians.
