SUBANG JAYA: Malaysian car manufacturer Proton overcame a bearish market to deliver 13,566 units in the second month of 2026.

While the total is a 31 per cent reduction compared to the previous month, the figure represents a 20.8 per cent increase over the same month in 2025, bringing sales for the first two months of the year to 33,399 units.

Proton, in a statement today, said the Total Industry Volume (TIV) is estimated to have decreased by 17.6 per cent to just 52,996 units, as the festive period in the middle of February suppressed vehicle deliveries.

“As a result, Proton’s market share for the month is expected to land at 25.6 per cent, while the year-to-date (YTD) market share number currently sits at 28.5 per cent.

“With five model launches over the last five months, Proton has been among the most active automotive brands, with introductions of EV, ICE, and PHEV models. These new models have boosted sales volume and have been responsible for the strong sales numbers to start 2026.”

The biggest seller remains the Proton Saga. After posting its best-ever sales month in January, another 6,047 units were delivered in February to bring YTD sales to 16,332 units—an improvement of 69.8 per cent over the previous year, allowing the model to retain its position as the best-selling model in Malaysia.

The model that kicked off Proton’s renewal was the Proton X50, with the latest version introduced in July 2025. The B-segment SUV has carried its sales momentum into 2026; with 1,842 units sold in February, YTD volume is now at 4,271 units, 31.1 per cent ahead of the previous year.

According to Proton, its 2026 S70 has attracted a lot of positive commentary after receiving the new i-GT turbocharged engine. With 1,940 units sold in February, the C-segment sedan was Proton’s second-highest volume model, bringing YTD volume to 3,544 units—an increase of 51.5 per cent.

Proton Edar chief executive officer, Datuk Abdul Rashid Musa, said 2026 has started brightly for the automotive company, with strong customer interest in its new range of models.

“At the same time, our efforts to improve the customer experience in showrooms and service centres are starting to pay dividends, further reinforcing our brand values,” said Abdul Rashid.

“In the short term, our most immediate challenge is to manage customer waiting times by increasing production and delivery numbers every month while maintaining product quality levels.

“With the investments made in our Tanjung Malim plant in recent years, we can meet the challenge, which should be proven by the sales numbers in the next few months,” he added.
