Shareh ‘The Jeneral’ won’t give student face in Fight For Change

It sounds like the plot of martial arts movies – a student takes on the master in a fight for dominance, only this time there are some twists involved.

For one, the student is older than his master by nine years and for another, this ‘battle’ is for a good cause.

On Nov 23, Twentytwo13’s co-founder and editor Haresh Deol will face professional fighter Shareh ‘The Jeneral’ Nasrullah of Lekir Fitness and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Academy at Cobra Club, Petaling Jaya.

The event is to fight for the welfare of journalists in Malaysia and aims at helping Malaysia Mixed Martial Arts Association (MASMMAA) change the way people view the sport.

Shareh has a 3-3-1 Muay Thai record and a 1-2 MMA record.

Proceeds from the event will be channeled to National Press Club of Malaysia’s (NPC) Journalist Welfare Fund and to MASMMAA for its youth development programmes.

“This is a great event to be involved in as I’m passionate about martial arts.

“I’ve been training Haresh for over a year now. He has a great heart and is in good physical condition – for an old man,” Shareh said in jest.

“I’ve been going easy on him at times as he is not as young as me but when we step into the cage, I won’t hold back!

“In all seriousness, Haresh has good skills even though he is fairly new to MMA.”

‘The Jeneral’ said Haresh made the wise choice of opting to fight using MMA rules instead of kickboxing.

“His ground game is not too bad. I’m used to standing up and hitting my opponents so I have to be careful not to fall into his trap,” said Shareh, who conducts group and one-on-one training.

He explained that while many see MMA as a brutal, bloody sport, it is quite safe for school children as there is no striking involved. Young children are taught grappling moves similar to Olympics-style wrestling.

“Of course like any contact sports, there are some risks involved,” said Shareh, who in April, came to the aid of a grasscutter in an attack by a group of men at Taman Tasik Tambahan, Ampang.

“I agreed to this fight because we want to educate the masses about MMA and to help promote it to schools.”

One of Malaysia’s top mixed martial arts (MMA) exponents, Agilan ‘The Alligator’ Thani, has given the Fight For Change 2019 the thumbs up.
