SheFights comes out fighting to empower women through self-defence

Tomorrow marks the 600th day since the country initially began the Movement Control Order (MCO) on March 18, 2020.

We are now on the road to recovery (fingers crossed). But in that time, many businesses have closed down, while others are barely surviving.

One of the most badly affected is gym operators, and this website has written several articles about their plight, some of which you can read:

However, SheFights, based in Cyberjaya and Mont Kiara, has survived the pandemic and is looking to grow. The women’s only gym describes itself as one that empowers women through personal safety and security skills by way of its self-defence classes.

The gym also has yoga classes, and organised Yoga By The Park in Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Kuala Lumpur, last Saturday. The event drew 50 participants.

“Being cooped up at home for almost two over years may have negatively affected our minds and body. Sometimes, the remedy you need is getting back to nature and yoga,” said yogini Jazzmin Yan.

“That was how we hit upon the idea of organising a class outdoors. It was very encouraging to see the places fill up quickly.

“We were a little worried as it rained heavily before the event. Thankfully, it stopped 30 minutes before we began, and the turnout was superb.”

Besides Yan, the other yoginis involved were Ruby Ru, Norazah Mohd Amin, Rin Zheng and Khim Wee.

Yan added that the gymnasium is now planning a self-defence class for women at the same venue early next year.

“SheFights Gym is known for its self-defence classes for women and children. So, what better way to showcase what we have, than to hold an outdoor class,” said Yan.

“We have started planning and hope to organise it early next year.”

In total, we have 2,497,265 infections, of which 2,401,823 have recovered.

Worldwide, there are 249.8 million cases and 5.05 million fatalities.

THAT MONDAY FEELING

WHAT A NAME

A race caller’s nightmare came through on Monday when a three-year-old Japanese filly won its first race.

The horse’s name? Sumomomomomomomomo (try saying that three times in rapid succession).

The name is a play on a Japanese tongue-twister that means ‘plums and peaches are both peaches’.

If you had too much meat during the Deepavali celebration (as if!), here’s a non-meat recipe to try from Holly Haines.

SOUNDS PLAUSIBLE

A TRIBUTE TO QUEEN

After a forced break last year, the Russell Curtis Queen Tribute Band is back with its big band show next month.

Open for a fully vaccinated audience, get your tickets here.

BLACKBIRD

To whet your appetite for the Queen Tribute show, here is Curtis with a cover of the Beatles’ Blackbird, a song written by Paul McCartney and credited, as usual, as a (John) Lennon-McCartney composition.

You can listen to the remastered Beatles’ version and Johann Sebastian Bach’s Bouree in E Minor that McCartney said inspired Blackbird’s guitar accompaniment.

Until next week, stay safe.
