Sepang International Circuit chief executive officer Azhan Shafriman Hanif confirmed holding talks with Formula One about hosting a round this year.
He, however, said it is not possible due to the Covid-19 pandemic but is opened to Malaysia once again being a Formula One host sometime in the future.
Malaysia hosted F1 races from 1999-2017 before giving up the opportunity due to the massive cost involved – up to RM300 million per year with minimal returns.
Shafriman was responding to Twentytwo13‘s article ‘Will Malaysia host F1 this year?‘ published earlier.
“Yes, we were contacted by Liberty Media on the opportunity to host Formula One in Malaysia,” said Shafriman said.
“However, due to the current situation with the (Covid-19) pandemic, it is not something that we are looking at this year.”
Shafriman, who replaced Datuk Razlan Razali in the hotseat in April, added his aim at the moment is to stabilise the business.
SIC is rearranging its calendar as several events were postponed this year.
“It’s good we have started talking (with Formula One). If a good offer comes along, we will evaluate for the future,” he added.
