‘Sports, fashion have power to encourage cultural change’

The Sport Integrity Global Alliance (SIGA) is joining forces with Yale University on “Female Athletes: Fashion, Governance, and Equity.”

This announcement takes place on the 50th anniversary of Title IX, the American legislation that enshrines principles of equality and inclusion, to protect students and employees from sexual and gender-based harassment.

This first-of-its-kind capstone course with the Jackson School of Global Affairs at Yale commences in Fall 2022, and serves as a springboard to advancing research in this area.

Students will examine real world issues at the crossroads of sports and fashion, covering topics from sustainability and fair labour practices to entrepreneurship, good governance and integrity and the role of the media to promote diversity and inclusion in sports.

The course is a key component of SIGA’s educational programmes to advance good governance in sports as part of its wider university network.

“Sports and fashion are powerful worlds that have the capacity to educate, empower and encourage cultural change,” said SIGA global chief operating officer and SIGAWomen managing director, Katie Simmonds.

“This innovative new capstone course on ‘Female Athletes: Fashion, Governance, and Equity’ bridges both industries, providing students with a unique set of tools, unrivalled expertise and the necessary leadership skills to make the difference in this increasingly competitive sector.”

She said SIGA and the SIGAWomen programme remain committed to continuing advancing good governance in sport and empowering female leadership at all levels and sectors of the sports industry.

Capstone Professor, Dr Mary Davis said clothing that is functional and distinctive is crucial for an athlete’s performance and for the establishment of a definitive image.

“On the fashion side, sports style and athleisure are the dominant forces in the marketplace. The economic impact across these fields is massive and the need for equity and inclusivity at all levels is urgent,” Davis added.

“The Jackson School of Global Affairs at Yale is therefore delighted to join forces with SIGA to deliver this cutting edge course with the common goal of driving cultural change and shaping the next generation of leaders in the industry.”

SIGA is the world´s largest coalition in the field of sports governance and integrity.

Supported by more than 100 international multi-industry supporters, SIGA is an independent and neutral organisation whose mission is to bring about reforms and enhance the integrity of all sports through a set of universal standards operated by an independent and neutral body.
