Sepang International Circuit (SIC) has been banking on its track usage – which forms the bulk of its annual income.
The Covid-19 pandemic, however, wrecked the world’s sporting calendar. It even left SIC scrambling to ensure operations were not severely hit.
In an attempt to rebound as the pandemic eases into the endemic phase, and with the rules relaxed, SIC is targeting to hit RM11 million from its track day rentals in 2022 – provided there were no more lockdowns or restrictions against motorsports, brought on by the pandemic.
Based on data obtained by SIC:
- track usage in 2019 amounted to some RM30 million, making up 70 per cent of SIC’s annual income.
- most track use is by car manufacturers, while track days are mostly organised by car, and motorcycle clubs.
- manufacturers contributed the most, based on the number of days. Porsche, for example, booked the track for close to one month, in 2019.
According to SIC, the projection for this year is RM4 million. This is because the government, only recently, had relaxed the lockdown rules. Despite this, the track has been fully booked with track day events lined up almost daily.
The circuit operator’s projections for 2022, dubbed the recovery period, has been set at a cautious RM6 million. However, SIC believes it can achieve RM11 million if there were no more movement control orders.
SIC’s full-day rental of the full track, day or night, on a weekday, is RM55,000 (excluding taxes), while on a weekend, it is RM60,500 (excluding taxes).
