Has the Selangor Hockey Association scored an own goal by misspelling its president’s name?
That is the question surrounding Ganesh Shanmugan’s nomination as vice president for Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) which lists his name as ‘Ganesan Shanmugan’ at the bottom of the form.
MHC’s elections are on Nov 16 with the Selangor association nominating Datuk Seri Subahan Kamal as president, the Regent of Pahang Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah Al-Sultan Abdullah as deputy president (men) and Professor Datuk Dr S. Shamala as deputy president (women).
Subahan and Shamala are incumbents while Tengku Hassanal is the new face.
Tengku Hassanal is the son of Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, who was MHC president before Subahan.
Selangor HA also nominated Datuk Ahmad Najmi Abd Razak, Datuk Seri Anil Jeet Singh, Mohd Asmirul Anuar Aris and Ranjit Singh as vice president (men) and Datin Mary Sadiah Zainuddin and Rogayah Mohamad as vice president (women).
MHC’s executive board consists of one president, two deputy presidents – one male and one female – and six vice presidents.
There is also a treasurer, four independent members, and chairpersons of seven committees.
Subahan and Shamala had earlier pledged they would not seek re-election if Malaysia fails to qualify for next year’s Tokyo Olympics. The national hockey team will face Britain on Nov 2 and 3 in a playoff for a ticket to Tokyo.
Twentytwo13, had on Oct 12, reported that the Johor Hockey Association (JHA) will nominate AirAsia Group Bhd executive chairman Datuk Kamarudin Meranun for the top post and Tengku Hassanal for the deputy president’s post.
MHC vice-president Datuk Manjit Majid Abdullah, in admitting that the current crop of MHC officials have “failed”, said the Johor association will nominate former international K. Maheswari for the other deputy president’s post.
Also in JHA’s, line-up, according to Manjit, are Sapura Energy group chief executive officer Tan Sri Shahril Shamsuddin and MMC Corporation Bhd group managing director Datuk Seri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh.
