YES, better connectivity ahead for East Malaysia

For as low as RM15 a month, Malaysians can enjoy 4G data from Yes and this includes the often left-out market of East Malaysia.

In announcing its YES Kasi Up prepaid and postpaid packages, YTL Communications managing director Datuk Yeoh Seok Hong said the company’s network is the nation’s only pure 4G network with 91 per cent coverage of the country.

“We are also well connected in all the rural areas. We are 4G ready for the people. As you know, 2G and 3G will be switched off by the end of next year.

“Also, when 5G comes in, it is layered on 4G network. So we are ready for that too.

“The backbone of our programme was built on 4G network for schools. In Malaysia, there are 10,000 schools and we have 4G-enabled 8,750 of them.”

This includes Sarawak and Sabah but Yeoh was quick to add it could be better.

“In the case of Sabah and Sarawak, the problem is unique as it is more diverse and has more rural areas.

“However, under the Jendela programme, the government will be building more towers and all telcos can build their base stations there and deliver 4G connectivity.”

This is indeed good news for East Malaysia who have always had trouble with connectivity issues.

Separately, YTL Communications chief executive officer Wing K Lee said there are three pillars to the “new affordable, new normal” packages.

One is for as low as RM15 a month whereby prepaid users can enjoy 10GB of data with no restriction for 30 days.

This is easily the cheapest prepaid plan on the market.

The second pillar is that for postpaid users. There is a RM49 plan for 100GB of data for 30 days with the first six months free on a two-year contract.

Finally, there is YES’ refer programme where customers can earn up to RM50 per referral under ‘YES Kasi Up Refer & Earn’. Their friends earn the equivalent amount.

The best part of the referral programme is that customers can cash out the RM50 reward into their bank accounts instead of using it to pay for YES products.

Wing said the YES Kasi Up campaign was born from the success of YTL Foundation’s Learn-From-Home (YTL-LFH) Initiative, which was launched in March when the Covid-19 pandemic caused schools to close.

YTL Foundation developed YTL-LFH, a collaboration with YES and FrogAsia when a survey it carried out showed that almost 50 per cent of parents did not have sufficient data at home to enable e-learning, and low-income families could not afford to purchase devices for their children when the lockdown was announced.

A survey by the Education Ministry a month later showed that almost 40 per cent of students lacked access to a device for e-learning.

‘Stay safe, stay learning’ was the ethos of the immensely successful YTL Learn-From-Home Initiative.

To date, over 400,000 SIMs and 100,000 mobile phones have been distributed to students nationwide – keeping the equivalent number of Malaysian students learning.

“In the same way, YES Kasi Up ensures no one gets left behind in today’s data-driven economy. We will continue to invest in our nationwide network to increase our coverage and serve the connectivity needs of the nation.

“We believe that by giving everyone in the country access to 100 per cent 4G connectivity, the most affordable data plans, and a much-needed cash boost, we can give them the helping hand they need.

“If the rakyat can get back on their feet, Malaysia can too.”

Here’s a round-up of The News Normal today.
