Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has finally announced his Cabinet line-up, exactly eight days after he was sworn in as Malaysia’s 10th prime minister.
Anwar leads a unity government after his Pakatan Harapan coalition won 82 seats in the 15th General Election, but this falls short of the 112 seats needed for a simple majority, and subsequently, to form a government. Pakatan Harapan then formed a coalition with other political parties to form a unity government.
The unity government is made up of Barisan Nasional (30 seats) Gabungan Parti Sarawak (23), Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (6), Parti Warisan (3), Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat (1), Parti Ikatan Demokratik Malaysia (Muda) (1), Parti Bangsa Malaysia (1), and two independents.
In naming his Cabinet in Putrajaya tonight, Anwar said: “This is a unity government Cabinet, led by three main components – Pakatan Harapan, Barisan Nasional and Gabungan Parti Sarawak.
“The strength of the unity government has reached two-thirds in Parliament, and this will help us form a Cabinet that is more cohesive.”
