The spotlight will be on the esteemed panellists involved in the upcoming 10th Forum on Crime and Policing in Malaysia, as the event aims to disseminate information related to crime, law and drug policies.
With the theme ‘Crime is Colour Blind’, the forum on June 22 in George Town, Penang, will see Malaysian Bar president Karen Cheah, Global Commission on Drug Policy commissioner Professor Datuk Dr Adeeba Kamarulzaman, ACP Dr S. Parusuraman, and DRB-Hicom University of Automative Malaysia vice-chancellor and chief executive director Professor Datuk Dr Omar Osman participate in the panel session.
Organising chairman Datuk Dr P. Sundramoorthy will act as the moderator.
Sundramoorthy, a renowned criminologist, said the event would act as a platform to understand that crime is colour-blind and does not discriminate.
“We chose ‘Crime is Colour Blind’ as every one of us is a potential victim of crime,” said Sundramoorthy.
“Sometimes, people become victims based on opportunities they create unconsciously, including not taking precautionary measures to protect their safety.
“We can also become victims even if we have not created opportunities for perpetrators. But it does not mean we can take the law into our own hands when we defend ourselves,” he added.
Sundramoorthy said that the public generally still consumes information related to crime and policing through reports. And this is where the forum comes into play.
“There are also many other aspects related to crime and policing, including ethics and integrity, that we hope to explore further,” said Sundramoorthy.
“We are pleased to have a group of diverse participants from all segments of society, including CEOs, non-governmental organisations and the private sector involved. We feel awareness and knowledge on crime and crime prevention is critical to every resident of this country,” he added.
The 10th edition of the event is organised by Universiti Sains Malaysia’s Centre for Policy Research and International Studies, the Penang government, Malaysia Crime Prevention Foundation (Penang) and the Penang State Contingent Police. Twentytwo13 is the official media partner.
Penang Governor, Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak will launch and deliver the keynote address at the Jen Penang Georgetown Hotel.
