Pakatan Harapan chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has been named Malaysia’s 10th Prime Minister.
The decision was announced by Istana Negara today, following a meeting this morning between the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah and the other Malay rulers.
The swearing-in ceremony will be held at Istana Negara at 5pm today.
Anwar’s appointment is in line with the powers of the Agong under Articles 40(2)(a) and 43(2)(a) of the Federal Constitution.
In the statement by Istana Negara, Al-Sultan Abdullah reminded all parties that there were no outright winners or losers, and urged all MPs to join hands to work together in the best interests of the nation.
Al-Sultan Abdullah said the country was a treasure, and that the leaders were its trustees.
“This treasure must be taken care of, as it will be inherited by the younger generation.”
The Agong also advised the new prime minister and the new government which will be formed, “to follow the attributes of the humble paddy, the fuller it is, the more it bows down”.
He added that the people should not be burdened by the political imbroglio as the country needs a stable government to improve the economy and continue with the country’s development.
“All MPs elected by the people are reminded to show solidarity by giving their best commitment and service to the people.”
The Agong also thanked his brother rulers for their continued support in helping him uphold the ideals and tenets of a constitutional monarchy.
