Anwar: Reconsider emergency, allow Parliament to convene

Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has once again urged Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah to reconsider the emergency declaration.

He said the majority of MPs had written to the Agong and he urged the King to use his wisdom to reconsider the reasons given (by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin) in seeking an emergency, last week.

Speaking to the media via Zoom today, Anwar said Al-Sultan Abdullah also has the power to allow Parliament to convene despite the ongoing emergency.

“An emergency is one matter, but the Constitution allows for Parliament to sit if it involves matters of security and matters of national interest,” he said.

“No one should use this emergency period as they wish, without proper check and balance,” he added.

In making the call, Anwar said no details were provided by Muhyiddin on how matters, including those related to Covid-19, will be dealt with during the emergency period.

“Our healthcare system is at breaking point and we need clear policy guidelines. Right now, there is a lack of transparency and coordination.

“Countries like Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand are doing their vaccinations and Malaysia is lagging behind yet we cannot ask questions,” he said.

THERE SHOULD BE UNIVERSAL ACCESS TO WATER SUPPLY

The Kedah government’s demand of RM50 million annually from Penang for drawing water from its side of Sungai Muda and threatening to divert the river in case of non-compliance portrays a lack of humane communal responsibility, writes Professor Emeritus Datuk Dr Mohamed Ghouse Nasuruddin.
