Based on recent announcements and declarations by politicians, a general election is imminent.
Seriously, these people must be kidding!
More than a week ago, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim made his “I have the numbers” declaration (again).
He seems to be in a hurry to get an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong so he can push through his personal agenda.
That’s despite the Palace informing the people that the King is recuperating after he fell ill.
It is apparent many politicians are bent on getting their way via a snap election but if that happens, it will come at a hefty price, given the Covid-19 pandemic.
Just look at the recent Sabah elections. Had the state assembly not been dissolved, things would be very much under control with sporadic Covid-19 cases.
But now, the people are spooked. Cases are sprouting all over the country. These cases mostly originate from Sabah because campaigning went on full steam. For the record, there were 260 new cases nationwide yesterday, the second highest since the Movement Control Order was imposed on March 18.
In their quest for power, politicians paid no heed to the health risks, not only to themselves but to all Malaysians.
Imagine what would happen if a general election is called anytime soon. What would be the consequences? It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that Covid-19 cases will spiral out of control and all our efforts for nearly seven months will go down the drain.
More people will die and the economy will nose-dive. The country will be brought down to its knees.
The excuse that there is political instability which needs to be addressed is sheer nonsense. Nothing must take precedence over the well-being of the people.
Political instability has been around for months and we have been managing as the priority is for people to get their lives in order.
Why are the politicians impatient? Can’t they wait just a few more months before they start their charade again?
A tweet yesterday by Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah stated “How about we all stay home for a while again”. While he has done a good job thus far, Noor Hisham should have directed this tweet to politicians early on – even before they went to Sabah to campaign.
Someone told me, however: “You think they would have listened to him?” The answer is they wouldn’t have. That’s how arrogant, selfish and blind they have become.
As we try to save ourselves from Covid-19, we also need to save ourselves from the politicians who have no qualms putting our lives on the line for their own benefit.
How do we do that? By uniting and telling them we won’t stand for their nonsense anymore. Don’t let #KitaJagaKita just be a nice-sounding tag. We must do as it says and look after each other.
I really hope the Palace makes the appropriate decision in the best interest of the people.
Anwar and the other power-crazed politicians can go fly a kite.
