‘Asean not waiting for AI future, we are here to shape it’

The future of artificial intelligence (AI) in Southeast Asia will not be written by any one country alone, but shaped by how well Asean member states coordinate, align, and build trust together.

Malaysia’s Digital Minister, Gobind Singh Deo, said that by working collectively, Asean can close the AI divide, safeguard societies, and unlock the full potential of innovation – building an AI future that is inclusive, secure, and distinctly Asean.

Speaking at the Asean AI Malaysia Summit 2025, Gobind said: “This summit sends a clear message – to our citizens, to our partners, and to the world: Asean is not waiting for the AI future. We are here to shape it – responsibly, together, and on our own terms.”

“Malaysia stands ready to work side by side with our neighbours … we too can create a shared future where technology serves humanity, where innovation uplifts all, and where trust is the foundation of progress.

“Together, we can unleash an ‘AI Avalanche’ of opportunity – a wave of innovation, inclusion, and progress that cascades across our region. From our bustling capitals to our most remote villages, this movement can ensure that every Asean citizen benefits from AI’s potential, that our businesses compete with confidence, and that our communities are empowered to thrive in the age of AI.”

Gobind said Malaysia is honoured to host this historic gathering.

“It is a summit that unites visionaries, leaders, and practitioners from across Asean with a shared purpose – to shape a future where AI empowers our people, strengthens our societies, and reflects our regional values.

“Today marks a milestone – not only in Malaysia’s digital journey but in Asean’s collective technological evolution. We know that AI is not just a tool; it is a force that will redefine governance, transform industries, reshape education, and touch every aspect of daily life.

“This is why it is vital that we face its challenges and opportunities together – grounded in common principles, mutual trust, and shared ambition.”

Gobind also highlighted the Malaysian government’s commitment to establish the Digital Trust and Data Security Strategy (2026–2030) and an independent Data Commission.

The two-day Asean AI Malaysia Summit 2025, at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre in Kuala Lumpur, features the participation of government representatives, experts, and industry players from around the world.

Among them are Chea Vandeth, Cambodia’s Minister of Post and Telecommunications; Pengiran Dato’ Seri Setia Shamhary, Minister of Transport and Infocommunications of Brunei Darussalam; and Dr Ieva Martinkenaite, Senior Vice-President and Head of AI at Telenor Group.
